Moves with the intensity
of a classic WWII movie

By Mark Heisey

"…she faced forward for a better look, he tipped his Borsalino hat with a greasy smile. His jet-black vampire eyes were so intense a shiver shot up Miriam’s spine."

Captain Jake Rogers and his crew have returned to sea in a Liberty ship as part of a convoy to bring supplies to the Allies in Europe. When the welds on the hastily built ship give way during a German U-boat attack, he and his crew are forced to abandon ship.

Fortunately, he is picked up by an Irish ship and eventually reunited with his crew. The men learn that the father of Jake’s girlfriend, a Jew, has been imprisoned and will soon be executed.

When the men succeed at a daring rescue, they are surprised to hear that Jake’s girlfriend, Miriam, is no longer in a safe place. She has joined a British espionage organization and has been captured.

After a second rescue, the group is on the Axis’ radar and hunted. A particularly determined bounty hunter known as The Bloodhound is set on capturing them and collecting the large reward.

Miller’s book combines the action-adventure genre with historical fiction. His professionalism is clearly displayed in his well-written sentences and apt descriptions. Throughout the work, his research and knowledge of the locations and history are on full display.

Typical of books within the action genre, the characters are fairly stereotypical, and the book feels a little adrift until all the pieces are in place and the “real escape” gets underway. Although the first half of the book is a bit slow-paced, this is weighed against the inclusion of a wealth of authentic background information. When the pace picks up, and the chase is on, the book moves with the intensity of a classic WWII movie and should entertain fans of the genre.
